Spa and wellness culture is already an inseparable part of the lifestyle of the modern people regardless whether it is translated as Sanum per aqua, or “Health through water”, or explained with the name of the small town Spa in Belgium. In fact it has its origins in ancient Rome and this practice for cure and natural way of living is alive today.
The revival of the spa culture lies in the 17th century under the Ottoman Empire, but only today is when we witness of the ancient spa therapies to the modern style of life.
In this sense, spa means a place to seek interior harmony and physical health, relax and comfort of the body and spirit. On the other hand, balneology treats already existing illnesses with therapeutic, and has no preventive function. That is why a balneological center resembles a hospital by its function and vision, while in the spa center the emphasis is on the unique atmosphere, aesthetics and stimulation of the senses.

The random development of spa and sticking spa to hotel brands could damage Bulgaria’s spa industry as it result of execution and biased impressions in clients for what spa is.
Spa centers are still luxury product not for Bulgarians only but for West-European clients with higher than average incomes as well. When a hotel invests in spa this impacts its prices and in residential buildings - the prices per sq m.
Maintenance of services and equipment
Spa center maintenance is directly linked to the design, section of equipment and materials and care taken by the manager. A carefully prepared design and an implementation with high quality materials result in extra maintenance. Low level in technology and materials result in extra maintenance costs and increase risks of creating a non-hygienic and unhealthy environment.
The services in the spa centers are selected after analysis of the location, potential customers and desired category and by their quality diversity they should meet the standards of the respective hotel, complex or commercial building where they are accommodated.
